Festival Kaleta

This weekend, CIAMO students were featured at the annual Afro-Brazilian mask festival Kaleta, held in Ouidah and organized by cultural promoter and CIAMO administrator Wilfrid Houndje. The Kaleta festival is an event that draws from the masked carnival dances performed by African slaves in Brazil, who would use such carnival events as a way to mock their white owners without fear of punishment. CIAMO students created masks for the festival and performed a variety of acts: traditional and contemporary dance, theater, chorus, and guitar ensemble. CIAMO teachers Sim DeSouza, John Mark Feilmeyer, and Carla Seidl also treated the Kaleta audience with their musical talents. CIAMO is proud to have collaborated with such an engaging and successful festival and looks forward to many more years of celebrating this exciting cultural event.
